Matt & Martha Miles
In September 2009, the InnerChange San Dimas team in San Francisco began to feel God putting the city of Oakland on their heart. Youth that they had known in San Francisco were living in Oakland and others were migrating to Oakland due to the rising cost of living in San Francisco. The youth invited them to come and live among them. After a year of prayer and discernment, they felt God confirming the invitation to start a team there.
Since that time, the InnerChange team has reached out to Spanish speaking youth and families in East Oakland in many ways. One has been through partnering with a local Spanish speaking church to offer English (ESL) classes. Another is ministering to young people who are incarcerated through Bible studies, prayer, personal visits, court accompaniment, & supporting families of inmates. Finally, the team builds community with youth & families through prayer, scripture study, & sharing meals, as well as by taking them into nature to go camping & white water rafting, cooking out in parks, playing soccer, going hiking and swimming. They believe that God is a God of celebration and they use every opportunity to celebrate lives by throwing birthday parties and baby showers, attending graduations and celebrating when someone is released from jail or draws closer to Jesus.
Oakland Team Mission:
*We seek to be humble disciples who sit at Jesus' feet.
*We pray for the Holy Spirit to fill us and empower us with God’s love.
*We learn from our neighbors and community by listening to them.
*We repent and acknowledge the sin that separates us from God and others.
*We pursue opportunities to build relationships and community.
*We are ministers of reconciliation
*We promote justice, mercy, and compassion for our friends who are often poor, marginalized, and discriminated against.
*We tell the stories of those who cannot speak up for themselves and in so doing find ourselves sharing God’s heart and story.
*We share the Good news of Jesus and invite others to follow Him!
